Refractive Surgery

SoCal Eye. Refractive Surgery Long Beach

If you have difficulty seeing clearly up close while reading or at a distance while driving the chances are that you have a refractive error. A refractive error is very common and occurs in over half of Americans. It is caused when the eye does not bend light correctly, resulting in a blurred image. In most cases this is caused by changes in the shape of the eye, the cornea, or the lens inside the eye. The most common types of refractive errors include:

  • Myopia(nearsightedness) occurs when the eye focuses objects in front of the retina. Distant objects become blurred, but near vision is usually preserved.
  • Hyperopia(farsightedness) occurs when objects are focused behind the retina. Typically, objects that are far away are more clear than those that are close. Difficulty usually begins with reading vision.
  • Astigmatism is caused by the cornea having an oval rather than round curvature. Objects are focused at more than one point, affecting both distance and near vision.
  • Presbyopia affects most people over age 40, making reading difficult. The cause is a loss of elasticity in the eye’s crystalline lens.

Prior to the 1990’s vision correction associated with refractive errors was solved with eyeglasses and contact lenses. In 1995 the FDA approved the first laser correction surgery – PRK and 4 years later LASIK. Today over 700,000 LASIK procedures are performed in the United States every year and over 10 million Americans have opted for LASIK over glasses or contact lenses. According to a 2016 study in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery,  LASIK has a 99% success rate in achieving 20/40 vision or better, and a 90% success rate in achieving 20/20 vision or better.
