What Happens During LASIK Surgery?

LASIK surgery has been a popular procedure to correct vision problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism for over 25 years. The goal is to reshape the cornea, allowing light to focus properly on the retina, improving vision. This is a fast, safe and highly effective treatment which offers life-changing outcomes.  Here’s a breakdown of what happens during the surgery:

Procedure Steps:

  1. Preparation: The patient’s eyes are numbed with anesthetic eye drops, and a speculum is used to keep the eyes open.
  2. Creating the Flap: A small flap is created on the cornea using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser. This flap is lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue.
  3. Reshaping the Cornea: An excimer laser, which uses ultraviolet light, is then applied to remove a precise amount of corneal tissue. This reshapes the cornea based on the patient’s prescription. For nearsighted people, the cornea is flattened; for farsighted people, it is steepened; and for those with astigmatism, the cornea is smoothed into a more regular shape.
  4. Replacing the Flap: Once the cornea is reshaped, the flap is carefully repositioned. The flap adheres naturally without the need for stitches.

Duration and Recovery:

The surgery typically takes about 10–15 minutes per eye, with the laser portion lasting less than a minute. Vision improvement is usually noticeable within 24 to 48 hours, though full recovery and stabilization may take a few weeks.

Success Rates and Statistics:

LASIK is highly successful, with approximately 96% of patients achieving 20/20 vision or better post-surgery. Around 90% of patients report satisfaction with the results. Serious complications are rare, affecting less than 1% of patients, and side effects like dry eyes or halos usually subside over time.

The procedure is quick, relatively painless, and offers life-changing results for millions worldwide.
