Lauren Chen, M.D.

Introduction:

Lauren Chen, M.D., is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in advanced cataract surgery and comprehensive glaucoma care. She is dedicated to helping patients achieve their best possible vision through personalized treatment plans, the latest surgical technology, and patient-centered care.

Dr. Chen graduated cum laude from the University of California, San Diego, earning both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. She received her medical degree from the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, where she was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society.

She completed her ophthalmology residency at the renowned UC Irvine Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, where she served as Chief Resident and was recognized for her leadership, clinical excellence, and collaborative approach to patient care. Dr. Chen then completed an AUPO-certified glaucoma fellowship at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute. 

As an active contributor to the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Chen has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, textbook chapters, and medical illustrations. She is committed to advancing eye care and staying at the forefront of ophthalmology.

At SoCal Eye, Dr. Chen specializes in cataract and glaucoma surgery, combining advanced surgical techniques with individualized treatment plans to help patients maintain healthy vision at every stage of life. She performs state-of-the-art cataract surgery using advanced technologies, including monofocal, toric, extended depth of focus (EDOF), and multifocal intraocular lenses, as well as femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery.

She provides the full spectrum of glaucoma care including iridotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), micropulse cyclophotocoagulation, minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries, glaucoma tube shunts (Ahmed, Clearpath, Baerveldt), and trabeculectomy. She tailors her glaucoma recommendations to each patient’s unique needs, lifestyle, and long-term vision goals.

Known for her warm, approachable demeanor and clear communication, Dr. Chen believes informed patients make the best decisions. She partners closely with each individual to preserve vision, improve quality of life, and provide exceptional eye care for years to come.

Why did you become an ophthalmologist?

I always knew I wanted to become a surgeon because I enjoy working with my hands and making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. During medical school, I discovered ophthalmology and was drawn to the immediate impact it can have on patients. It’s one of the few surgical specialties where people can literally see the results of their surgery, sometimes as early as the very next day. I also love that ophthalmology is constantly evolving, with new technologies and treatments that allow us to provide better outcomes for our patients.

What do you enjoy most about being an ophthalmologist?

The relationships I build with my patients are what I enjoy most. Whether I’m helping someone regain clear vision after cataract surgery or working with a glaucoma patient to preserve their sight for decades to come, it’s always incredibly rewarding to help people continue doing the things they love and maintain their independence.
