Cataracts & Lens Technology
Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the United States each year with over 24 million people over the age of 40 affected by the condition. Cataracts are most commonly treated with surgery and over 3.5 million cataract surgeries are performed every year making it the most common surgical procedure. During cataract surgery the Cataract Surgeon will replace the clouded lens with a replacement artificial lens implant. Patients have a number of options in choosing a replacement Intraocular Lens (IOL) and most recently they have an additional exciting option that creates some compelling benefits. The Light Adjustable Lens from RxSight™
The Light Adjustable Lens
The Light Adjustable Lens is the only adjustable intraocular lens (IOL) available that allows the patient to optimize their vision after lens implantation and healing. For patients selecting the Light Adjustable Lens, the first step is to have the cataract safely removed and the adjustable IOL implanted. The cataract removal and IOL implantation procedure is the same as if the patient selected a non-adjustable IOL.
Achieving Customized Vision With the Light Adjustable Lens™
What is unique about the Light Adjustable Lens is that once the eye has healed after Cataract Surgery, the patient returns to the eye doctor to have their vision tested. During this visit the patient will be able to preview and compare possible vision outcomes based on their unique preferences and lifestyle requirements before selecting a prescription for their adjustable lens. Once the perfect prescription has been achieved, the doctor will then apply a proprietary light treatment that precisely reshapes the patient’s implanted lens based on the visual correction that is needed to target the perfect prescription. Patients may need 3 to 5 total light treatments to reach their vision goals.
